Capital Camps & Retreat Center was founded in 1987, and is an independent non-profit organization (501C). The agency is a Beneficiary of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, an American Camping Association (ACA) accredited camp and a member agency of the JCC Association. The main purpose of the organization is to provide a summer camp program for children and retreat opportunities to the Jewish community. The camp is located in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and the winter offices are located in Rockville, Maryland with close ties to both the Baltimore and Northern Virginia communities.
Our goals as an agency have not changed over the years, even as the camp and retreat industries have become more sophisticated and demanding. We are committed to informal Jewish education via a fun, meaningful and nurturing experience – with the long term outcome being one of maintaining and enhancing Jewish identity and therefore community vitality and vibrancy.
As an independent not for profit agency, our Board of Directors are the fiduciaries of our efforts. And as such these volunteers play an active role in the philosophical and financial decision making process.
In 2002 the Washington D.C., and Baltimore Jewish communities joined together to undertake a massive redevelopment of the facility that will ensure we remain a first class camp and retreat facility for many years to come. This ambitious multi-million dollar investment is based on the original notion of our agency founders – Jewish camp and retreat services make a profound difference in the lives of participants and therefore help ensure a strong Jewish community.
While buildings are vitally important to success - we will always be a environment that challenges, nurtures and cares for children, staff, families and organizations whether they join us for a summer experience or a retreat program.
